Vernon County War History

This is a transcription of the men and soldiers included in the Book “Vernon County War History”

Where there are photos, I have included them. The page adjacent to the Title Page has the photos of the men who helped to compile this book.

These are alphabetical listings, as recorded in the book, starting at page 47. However, there are pages transcribed of Post Charter Members which are not in alphabetical order so I’d suggest using the search option in your web browser if you have a particular name you are looking for. I’d start with surname, and if no luck, simply try the given name in case the surname in question has been misspelled. And of course, if still no luck, alternate spellings in your searches might be fruitful.

Wm. A. Jacobson, son of Mr. &  Mrs. Jacob A. Jacobson was born on Asbury Ridge, town of Viroqua, October 26, 1898, and was killed in action, in the service of his country, October 7, 1918. He received his education in the Seas Branch school and completed the freshman year in Viroqua High School.

On May 2, 1918, he entered into the services of the United States government as a member of Headquarters Co., Third Wis. Inf.m at Camp Douglas, that organization later going to Camp MacArthur, Texas, preparatory to transportation over seas. This organization formed a part of the famous 32nd Division.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the citation of which appears on page 20 (not transcribed)

P. 48 –  William A. Jacobson Post, no. 138

On November 11, 1919 pursuant to action taken by several Public- spirited citizens of Viroqua, headed by Dr. C. V. Porter, a public meeting was held at the courthouse in the city of Viroqua, to observe the first anniversary of the termination of hostilities in the world war. The war was still very much a reality then. The process of mustering out and returning  2,000,000 men to their homes from the army camps of this country, and bringing back and mustering out 2,000,000 more from overseas, was of such gigantic proportions that up to the time of the holding of this meeting, men were still returning to their homes from military service.

Words can but inadequately describe the spirit which animated and prevailed at this meeting. It was not a spirit which would express itself tumultuously, such as manifests itself when the word was flashed to the world that the Armistice had been signed. It was rather a spirit akin to that which soothes the soul of one who has endured a crushing burden, and then suddenly finds the oppressive clouds of gloom and uncertainty dispelled buy some fortuitous circumstance.

And it was under circumstances such as these that a suggestion that the former service men should form an organization of their own bore fruit. The American Legion was the most prominent of service men’s organizations. A national and state organization had already come into existence. It was therefore decided to organize a local post of the American Legion. A temporary organization was effected, a name decided upon and officers were chosen.

Owing to the regrettable loss of early records, it is impossible to include in this record the names of these men who should properly be designated as Charter Members. Only those whose names appear on the application for charter can be given. They are as follows:

A. Heinz, Hugh Hamilton, Amond O. Tuhus, Olaf Nelson, Sidney Simonson, Paul Moe, Maurice A. Dekerel, J. J. McKenna, M.O. Tuhus, Henry G. Hanson, Douglas Nelson, Floyd Jacobus, Archie L. Nelson, Eddie T. Anderson, Elmer E. Hall

During the year there was not very much doing. We put on a few dances. On November 11 we gave a big feed for all members of the post and citizens of this vicinity at the Legion Hall. After the supper we moved down to Grosskopf’s Hall where we had a short program, the main part being a speech by attorney A.H. Schubert of La Crosse. After this, we danced, and from the reports everyone had a good time.

During the year of 1921 there was not much excitement except that we put on a dance where we sold tickets to the dance with a chance to win a Ford. This made us enough so that we were able to purchase our Post Colors and the rifles for the firing squad.

During the year 1922 we gave a few dances. On September 3rd
